As a Teaching Assistant I would have discussions with the teacher to discuss the lesson plan and the teacher’s expectations and outcome for the lesson. It would be my responsibility to assist the teacher in completing risk assessments before the lesson begins and to read all the instructions on the safe use of the equipment. I would ensure that all the instruments are ready for the lesson, having checked they are in good repair and unlikely to cause injury i.e. : splinters from wooden instruments, sharp edges. If any of the instruments are electronic I must check for current safety test stickers and check all cables and plugs for breaks and repairs, if battery operated, check that the batteries are working and have not blown.
E.g: • A support worker showing a service user with Autism picture cards of what activities they will be doing • A service user using a makaton sign to say that they need to use the toilet • A tutor using a rhyme or song to teach (e.g. abc song) These are all communicating to provide information. 3. We communicate seeking information. E.g: • A passer by asking you the way to the post-office • A student asking the teacher for help to understand a subject • A Service user pulling a support workers hand to ask a question 4.

Teachers must protect themselves and the easiest way to do this is to follow the code of practice. The codes of conduct for teachers were reintroduced in June 2012: the code is there to guide teachers in their professional opinion and practice. There are four standards, respect, integrity, care and trust. Teachers need to register and be accountable for their skills and training and teaching under the code, by meeting 33 standards which cover the complexity and variety of teaching. Some of the standards covered are communication, equality and inclusion, pupil student development, school policies and curriculum.
They must always be stored somewhere locked and safe, they must never be removed from outside your work place. Records kept on computers must also be kept safe and protected. The workplace will have polices relating to records on computers which will include access being restricted by a password, and the computer system being protected by a firewall against the possibility of people hacking into it. The information that will be handles about the people we support will be very personal, it may contain details of medical history, details of family background and financial information. People need to feel confident that if they give these personal details they will not be shared with everyone.
All areas of the home must be kept free from hazards such as trolleys, wires, cleaning equipment etc. All fire exits must be kept clear at all times. Daily inspections must be recorded in the relevant files. Regular fire drill must be carried out. This will ensure that everyone is familiar with the procedure and help minimise the risk if a fire should occur.
Students on placement in the nursery are advised of our confidentiality policy and required to respect it. • Is the information up to date and correct.
