Health & Safety at Work Act 1974 The Health & Safety at Work Act 1974 is a law that provides protection for the self and others in the workplace. It is the duty of every employer to make sure their employees are aware of Legislation by providing training and instruction. This is implemented in our school by carrying our regular risk assessments and ensuring that all staff are trained on all aspects of health and safety. The school must have up to date posters and that we ensure that there is an effective way of reporting hazards to the appropriate person. Policies ensure guidelines to protect pupils, staff, parents, visitors and contractors when on the school premises, this includes how risks can be controlled and who is responsible for this.
For example there must be safe entrances and exits to the workplace (nothing must be in the way or blocking the entrances/exits), all equipment must be safe to use and tested regularly so risks to health and safety are minimised. In order for learners to be able to safely work and learn, certain rules and conditions must be established, these are known as Ground Rules. They should support the expectations of behaviour of everyone in a group including the teacher and ensure that lessons run smoothly. Ground rules demonstrate a professional and organised manner, set the tone of a lesson and the routines to be followed. Health and safety requirements can also be imposed. All students require appropriate conditions to work and by setting the atmosphere and boundaries from the outset avoids potential disruption that could lead to misunderstandings.

Luckily the government has several methods for controlling that the delegated legislation is relevant and good. First we have The Joint Committee on Statutory Instruments, known as the Scrutiny Committee and it is made up of MPs and peers. It exists to look at each statutory instrument in detail to make sure that it falls within the boundaries set by the Parent Act and to refer provisions requiring further consideration to both Houses of Parliament.
The principal is responsible to make the school mission effective, safe, under control, and give each individual their rights that the constitution provides them.
