Instruction: After reading the story again generate eight different approaches Raul might take to dealing with the tension that correspond to the eight strategies identified by researchers: 1) denial: Raul thinks that his current situation is not as bad as it seems, because his parents are being his parents. Every other college student experiences the same thing and what he is experiencing from moving back home is normal. 2) disorientation: Raul is confused because after 9 months of being away from home learning how to make his own decisions, becoming independent and more responsible with his money. Returning home, has lead him to feel like he’s regressed back to a high school kid again; however, with constant tension with his parents of allowing him to make his own decision but at the same time treating him like a kid again—rather than the adult he feels that he has become. 3) Alternation: Raul thinks he needs to change his behavior to adjust to his parents wishes and desire to be a kid again.
English Composition January 23, 2013 Growing up, most people experience what it is like being pressured by an adult to excel or succeed in something that you have no interest in whatsoever .Not so much because you want to excel at it or learn about it, but because it is something the adult thinks would be best for you. It could be learning a new sport, learning a new language or even a new instrument. In the selection “Giant Dreams, Midget Abilities” by David Sedaris, we read about a boy who goes through this exact situation after his father decides that he and his younger sisters should start a family music group to support his love and appreciation for jazz music. He made of had some emotional trouble as his never had a father. Childhood His mother had high hopes from him and wanted him to become a doctor or a lawyer so his mother and grandparents where pushing him to improve his education by reading a lot. This meant Samuel was now intellectually developing at a higher level then he should be at his age. His social skills were also good as he went to several segregated schools meaning he was meeting many people but he never really spoke to anyone who did not attended the segregated schools meaning he may have a struggle learning to talk to them. He was at the right level for physical development.
Teens are sometimes more comfortable speaking with someone other than their parents. By informing him to this fact it could help him ease the feeling about speaking with me. If Adam does not understand why his parents have brought him to speak to me, I would clarify for him that his change in behavior including grades, change of friends and lack of respect for the rules are a big concern for his parents and they are just very worried something is going on that he is not comfortable speaking with them about. I would overlook the crying at first because mention of it may put him in a defensive mode. A couple relaxing non-defensive questions I would ask are what subjects in school he’s taking and what is his favorite subject.

One of the main characters in the book Lafayette who didn’t want to be like other kids in the projects when his friend Rickey started influencing him to do some bad things, and he started being like him even though he knew that was bad but he choose to confirm and take that route because it was a normal behavior for the projects children. However Lafayette brother pharaohs choose not to be like the projects kids and he went after his choice he wanted to be different and achieve something, just like his cousin Dawn did by finishing high school and going into collage. That could also be seen in the movie mean girl when the girl Katie came back to the united states she made a choice to confirm to the teenage life in America is like because she thought that otherwise they would have never accepted her, so she tried to fit in and she was considered to be a mean girl just because she wanted to follow the crowd. I remember that walk home was the longest one of my life. (Graham 7) Reading this quote shows that his classmates came up with anything they could so they could make fun of him. As a teenager, Drake’s social life did not get much better than his childhood’s. Drake did anything he could to fit in, from smoking to drinking, you name it. All he wanted was to be accepted, but it was hard to fit in because he was not rich and white like all of his other classmates.
