JOHN AND LORRAINE Both John and Lorraine are sophomores in high school. However John hates school, but Lorraine doesn’t. For John, high school is just a place to do pranks (set bombs in toilet, roll apples). The main reason that he dislikes school is his parents’ pressure. They always compare him with his older brother. For Lorraine, it’s more easy because she’s the only child. But her mom puts on her about public image. Lorraine can’t feel confident about herself even she’s pretty. John feels comfortable to prevaricate, however Lorraine can’t. His hobby of smoking, drinking and lying were influenced by his parents. Her paranoid behaviors come from her mother’s harsh criticisms, such as “You’re not a beautiful girl, Lorraine”. But according to John that Lorraine is a pretty girl and she just needs a little confidence. Even Lorraine’s mother often makes her cries by her abuse words and action; Lorraine still has compassion to her mom. Her loneliness affects her thinking about people. She thinks about omens all day in the zoo “ I should have just left there and then because I knew things were going to get involved”; and she also has foreshadow about Mr.Pignati’s dead. He and his wife, Conchetta, had shared a lot of unforgettable memories together. Her dead leaves Mr.Pignati the loss and loneliness in his life. He goes to the zoo everyday and has a best friend named BoBo- a baboon. The most remarked thing about Mr.Pignati is his pig’s collection. According to Lorraine: “There were pigs all over the place. It was ridiculous. I never saw so many pigs. I don’t mean the live kind; these were phony pigs. There were glass pigs and clay pigs and marble pigs”. He seemed to be proud when he shows the collection. Through John and Lorraine, we can easily see Mr.Pignati loves children. He takes John and Lorraine go to the zoo and supermarket. He is a also a person that makes people feel comfortable through his jokes, smarty games. NORTON Norton Kelly in The Pigman by Paul Zindel is John and Lorraine’s classmate, a mean boy who has stealing, cheating, and lying avocation. According to Lorraine :”Norton has eyes like a mean mouse, and he’s the type of kid who thinks everyone’s trying to throw rusty beer can at him”. He’s been a social outcast since he stole a bag of marshmallow; and he likes to play with dolls when he was little. The kids’ teasing him about his past of playing doll, and call him “The Marshmallow Kid”. Norton is a main villain of this novel, who destroys Mr.Pignati’s pigs
