Edmond’s Bicycle Master Plan A few years ago, one of my mother’s good friends was cycling along a road in Northwest Oklahoma City. She was wearing all of her protective gear but there was one problem. The road she was riding on did not have a lane designated for cyclist. She was struck by a motorist, and the driver fled the scene. Badly injured, she was left on the side of the road and died shortly after the accident. This tragedy could have been avoided if there was a separate lane for cyclist. The Bicycle Master Plan was adopted 5-0 by the Edmond City Council in the third week of November of this year. The Bicycle Master Plan is a step forward for the City of Edmond. This plan will support economic development, improved transportation, promote health and wellness, environmental support and overall, provide for a better community. Some citizens of Edmond, as in any community, do not own a form of motorized transportation. Buying a car can prove to be difficult in these poor economic times. Having lanes designated for bicyclists can help in the difficulty of getting to and from work for these citizens by improving their transportation needs. Taking advantage of these extra lanes for cyclists not only aides in economic situations and transportation needs but will prove beneficial for the health and wellness of Edmond’s citizens. The lanes created by the city will encourage people of all ages to get out of the house and exercise. Not only do these designated lanes promote the health of the citizens but promotes the health of the planet. With more people riding bicycles, the amount of carbon monoxide and other harmful emissions released in the atmosphere will be decreased.
