Kimberlee Hodges Comm. Studies 2221 Spring 2013Competent Communicator Communication is such an integral part of all of life's relationships. Therefore being a competent communicator is essential in presenting an effective speech to your audience. For my assessment of a competent communicator, I chose Joel Osteen. He is a minister from Houston, Texas, that broadcasts worldwide. I usually do not watch any type of religious programs or speakers, but there is something about him and his way of speaking that is truly captivating. So after watching him several times, I started to look at just exactly what he did from beginning to end in his program when he spoke. He tells a joke or story at the beginning of his program. This is very effective. It helps draw in the audience. It captures the attention of the people, which is very important to get them interested and focused before he actually delivers his message. The next thing I noticed was he is very clear and organized. He knows what his message is and sticks to it. He is specific about what he is talking about and sticks to the point of what it is that he is speaking about. He does not stray from his message, but he sticks to the general idea or message he is trying to get across. Another effective tool he uses is word choice. Words are powerful. They convey your message and influence the audience and its perception of you. Word choice and arrangement need just as much attention as speech organization and purpose. His messages are clear, accurate, descriptive and he uses short words that are easy to understand. He does not jump all over the place from topic to topic and he does not use a lot of jargon or slang when he speaking. Also, the way you choose to use your body language is an important part of speaking because it enhances your message and gives you more credibility. It also helps emit confidence. The way you stand, your movements, gestures, facial expressions, and eye contact help communicate your message and achieve your speech’s purpose. Body language should be smooth, natural, and convey the same message that your listeners hear. Along with your body language, your voice has a major effect on your audience. A lively, excited voice attracts and keeps listeners’ attention. A speaking voice should be pleasant, natural, forceful, expressive, and easily heard. Your voice should be the right volume, pitch, speed, and quality as well as having selective pauses which reflect and add meaning and interest to your message.
