In William Golding’s novel, Lord of the Flies, the main character, Ralph is a natural born leader who tries to keep civilization amongst the schoolboys. If Ralph doesn’t keep the others civilized, then they all will become savages. When Ralph was first introduced, one could see his excellent sense of observation. Observation is a key to become a good leader. Ralph was chosen as the leader. He exemplifies order among the boys. “Listen everybody… If this isn’t an island, we might be rescued straight away. So we’ve got to decide whether this is an island or not. Everybody must stay around here and wait and not go away. Three of us- if we take more, we’d all get mixed, and lose each other-three of us will go on an expedition and find out. I’ll go, and Jack, and, and…” (Golding 23-24). Ralph doesn’t waste time to bring order to the group. He shows a keen personality and self control by not hopping into conclusions. Ralph shows the ability to reason well with others. “If faces were different when lit from above or below-what was a face?” (78). For a young English schoolboy, this is good logical thinking. “If a ship comes near the island they may not notice us. So we must make smoke on top of the mountain. We must make a fire.” (Golding 38). He tells the group that they need to do something that will attract a ship or a plane to the island. Otherwise their chances of getting off the island alive are very slim. Ralph is the leader though and he knows best. Also, he has the charisma and leadership qualities, he tries to keep the group civilized but not to where everyone disagrees with his strict decisions. “This is what I thought. We want to have fun. And want to be rescued” (37). Ralph has an excellent way to reason with the boys and also keep the priorities straight.
