y A good night’s sleep The short story ”A good night’s sleep” deals with a disturbing night of George Lockhart, a teacher of communication and General studies who also suffers under the condition of being an insomniac (page 1, line 1; Just when he was beginning to fall asleep, George Lockhart, an insomniac (..)) Mr. Lockhart lives a thoughtful life, as he has a hard time letting go of his thoughts and get rested in the night. Some of the many things that disturb his mind are small events, like where to take his son the following weekend, the disturbing muzak from the wild nightlife, what to teach his class in the next morning or if he even has the time to get a good nights sleep. Besides all Mr. Lockhart’s small thoughts, there where one thing in particular that interrupt his mind, the fact that his ex wife, Elaine weren’t laying beside him in his old comfortable bed anymore (page 2, line 41.; “He tried not to think of Elaine, his ex-wife, sleeping in their old, comfortable double bed - alone? - …”) Mr. Lockhart doesn’t tell us a lot about his family, his ex wife and son. What we hear is that Lockhart haves a hard time figuring out where to take his son, Ben, this weekend (p. 2, line 43; and tried not to start worrying about what to do with Ben, their son, when he took him for the weekend). Which gives us the idea that Lockhart isn’t a father who knows his son that well, because otherwise he would know what his son likes to do and where he likes to go. As mentioned before, Lockhart misses the presence of his wife in the night, which could give us the idea that their divorce could be the essence of him being an insomniac. The main theme the short story deals with is empathy. There aren’t direct evidences for this but it is shown between the lines, as Lockhart and the homeless girl talks.
