10/12/2010 Twenty-First Century Student Abstract Are community colleges meeting the needs of the twenty first century student? The evolution of the workplace is forcing many of us to return to school. Some are looking to advance in their current positions while others are starting new careers altogether. “Specifically, this essay will analyze my personal experience with career change and the community college. Twenty-First Century Student As of the late 1980’s, technological advancement has obligated workers to become more educated in order to keep up with labor force demands. I want to solidify my role in society and secure my future by obtaining a college degree in the medical field. I decided on Miami-Dade College because of affordability and quality of education. My plan is to transition into the medical field as smoothly as possible. My goal is to become a physical therapist. I first acquired training and certification as a phlebotomist at Lindsey Hopkins Technical Education Center, afterward acquired a position as a Laboratory Assistant at Aventura Hosppital and Medical Center where I am at present employed. I explored educational opportunities with private schools and discovered that there tuitions are much higher and the quality of education is lower than that of the community college, however it seems that they are better poised when it comes to preparing modern students for immediate career transitioning. We are exploring the issue of community colleges evolvement at the same pace as student needs.
