Growing up in Germany my parents divorced when I was just a pre-teen. I switched schools and my mother worked two jobs, supporting our new family of three. She eventually met my step-father and remarried. They had another child and I get along wonderfully with my 13 year younger step-sister, which is not the case with my two year younger sibling. Stress, up-rooting from our hometown, not having a father in my life, all these things I am just starting to realize, affected me in many more ways than I thought. It brought out a competitive, stubborn streak in me that has helped me achieve many things in my life. The biggest challenge I would have to say was moving from Europe at the age of 21 to North America. Not only was I leaving behind everything I knew, all my friends and most of my extended family, but I was also starting a whole new chapter of my life called adulthood. I was determined to move out of my parents’ house, get a job and support myself. This turned out was a bit harder than I had imagined. The first obstacle I encountered was immigration law. The Canadian government was opposed to letting me into the country based on the fact that I was legally an adult and did not have anything to offer Canada. After a personal interview at the Canadian embassy it was determined that I indeed would be allowed to move to Kelowna, British Columbia with my parents & siblings. Upon arriving in our new hometown we all started to search for a place to live and work. It was strange to be in a new city, across the globe, not knowing anyone. I was determined to make the best of it and start a new life. I promptly enrolled in the Business Management program at the local college and got started with my studies. I moved out of my parents house and into my first apartment. It did not take long for me to find a job either. It turned out that with my drive and determination
