5-12-2012 BSHS 332 Week 5 The agency that I sought out after was The American Red Cross of the greater Chicago land area. I spoke with Debby Hopwood the director of emergency services in the district. We spoke on Wednesday May 2nd. She has been apart of the American Red Cross for several years. The American Red Cross has helped thousands of people over the years. The areas that the American Red Cross focuses on are health and safety training, emergency services and supporting of the Armed Forces their families, as well as disaster preparedness and relief help. It always is very difficult to ensure that all the services are cared for but in the budgeted field. There was usually only enough money to cover the services that were needed by recent victims. Not having enough money to work with emergency’s can be very stressful. She had stated that sometimes she would go way over a budgeted emergency cost because she just wanted to help everyone. Another dilemma was she would have to choice between two different individuals that need care and was only able to help one of them. Ethical dilemmas that are faced by the Red Cross that are too many people need assistance and care but they are only able to help a portion that need the assistance. They are required by law to inform their clients what they may and may not be receiving from them and that they are required to keep everything confidential. They are not to report or give any information about any individual to a third party without the permission first of the individual. The Red Cross has a code of ethics that goes all across their company and everyone has to abide by it. They provide training so that all employees know what is ethical and unethical as they work for the corporation. Training ensures that all employees are making the right decisions. They also provide a mentorship career so that they are able to shadow and learn how to observe how ethical dilemmas are handled. The system that is used by the American Red Cross is meant to collect the client or individuals information through a telephone screening to insure that need of assistance that is needed for the client.
