What Is Love?

295 Words2 Pages
In the article “What Is Love?” by Paul Gray, he states “romance is real. It is not merely a conceit; it is bred into our biology” (Gray 1). I would have to agree that love can be a subject of scientific study, yet quite difficult & that it is in bred in each of us. However can also be misleading. Gray claims that it “can be quantified through measurements: pulse and breathing rates, muscle contractions, a whole spider web of involuntary responses” (Gray 1). But then again he adds it “could be mistaken for anything from indigestion to a manic attack” (Gray, 1). Just like in illnesses not every patient will have the same symptoms. Same as for medications and its side effects can differ in each patient. Doctors can misdiagnose a patient merely on the simple fact of its lack of symptoms or the vagueness of its symptoms. The same goes for love. We all experience and love differently due to many factors that come into play. We love our significant other different from the way we love our parents, children and so forth. The interpretation from each of us on love can also be effected by social as well as religious values, our childhood, personalities, self-value, cultural, loving previously, and even timing. Running exams on someone in love such as Helen Fisher did with MRI usage will show the chemicals reacting to prove such. Yet person A and person B do not necessarily have to perceive love the same. So yes, love is in bred in our biology but can be a difficult subject of a scientific study due to the differences in each of us. Gray, Paul. “What Is LOVE?”. TIME Magazine. Time Inc., 24 Jun. 2001.
