What is Curriculum and what impact does it have on our teaching and education? How do we relate curriculum and inclusion? The Latin word for curriculum translates as “racecourse”, which, in perspective refers to the course of and the experiences from which children develop and mature into adulthood. During the course of this essay I shall explain and answer these questions and my perception of them and I shall also seek answers to balance and counterbalance the arguments that may arise from differing perspectives and theorists. I will also explain how curriculum uses and incorporates different theories, models and principles and demonstrate how these are utilised within my place of work and the reasons I believe they are the best tools at my disposal. In formal education, a curriculum is a set of courses and the content therein, planned and implemented by a school, college or university with the aim of achieving a set outcome. At TTE we implement a varied program which caters for students of differing abilities and entry levels. TTE is a large vocational training centre that is fully utilized as a single, integrated base to ensure effective shared use of resources between learners and commercial customers. We maintain an environment that enables all learners to be trained using the best resources available. Qualifications for learners through TTE whether they are apprentices or commercial are varied and are awarded through organisations such as EAL, City and Guilds, ABC, OCN and Edexcel. The success of inclusion is clearly related to curriculum since curricula often create significant barriers to learning. These barriers are related to a number of interconnected parts of the curriculum such as content, language of teaching, classroom management, learning styles and paces, timeframes, materials and equipment available for teaching and learning, and assessment
