Many interventions are made by schools to help promote better health in children. This essay will look at three case studies and use them to show how effective these interventions are or are not. After studying them it became clear that there were four main interventions used by the schools to help promote better health in the children, these are exercise, education, food and health monitoring. The first two case studies look at two girls from different countries and we see what is similar and different about their school and home life. The third case study looks at a school that has had success due to a new headteacher implementing interventions. The first intervention that schools can make to promote better health is exercise. Kate, a 13 year old from Yorkshire who comes from a family with not much money, has 2 hours compulsory Physical Education every week. Now for 9 year old Lakshmi from south India whose family is very poor, her school has no sports facilities but they do still give the children a daily physical education lesson. (Finlay et al 2010) This type of intervention is effective as exercise is an important way of maintaining a healthy body and in these classes when the children are taught how to play games it might even encourage them to play the same games out with the school environment and so in turn they will get even more exercise and exercise is one of the main keys to all round better health. The second intervention that I picked out of the case studies was healthy food. Schools can provide children with healthy food to choose from instead of the usual fast food types associated with school cafeterias. Kate has been known to skip lunch and eat crisps/sweets instead and due to money her home meals are usually cheap filling ones like burgers. (Finlay et al 2010) Her school trys to help by providing children like Kate from low income families
