However, in addition to this investment made by employees, I find a much larger investment made by employers in the human capital of their employees. Several researchers have studied the sustained rapid labor productivity growth at Lowell during the 1830s and 1840s [Davis and Stettler, 1966, McGouldrick, 1968, Zevin, 1975, David, 1975, Nickless, 1979, Williamson, 1972]. David and several others find strong growth in the multi-factor productivity residual, which David attributes to learning-by-doing. However, this learning effect could arise from worker skills or instead, as Zevin [1975, p. 5] suggests, from managerial or “organizational” learning. Using data on individual workers, I find that individual experience, and the associated human and physical capital investments, explain almost all of the growth in labor productivity.
The railways, particularly the Trans-Siberian railway, also gave Eastern Russia a link to Europe and Western Russia a link to the Pacific Ocean, which made it easier to export Russian goods. Therefore the Russian governments’ investment in railways was extremely successful in promoting economic growth. The Russian government was also successful in improving Russia’s heavy industry through the introduction of tariffs on imports. This clearly helped Russian heavy industry to expand as steel production increase eightfold from 1880 to 1905 and petroleum production increased over 2500% during the same time period. These tariffs, introduced by Vyshnedgradsky and continued by Witte, both increased revenue for the government and made
Year 8 change assessment 1. What changed in the iron industry between 1750-1900 In the 1760s Britain had plenty of iron ore and limestone for the industry. Iron was very important because it was used for tools, machinery, ships, railways and trains. Iron was exploited, manufacturing moved from being made in people's homes to being made in purpose built factories. Due to this more factories and industries are made therefore it makes more jobs for the people which benefits them because more money gives a better quality of life.
The development of these technologies changed transportation, manufacturing, and even communication. These technologies also contributed to creating huge factories, through standardization, and thus furthering urbanization. The assembly line was a massive factor in industrialization, although it was invented pre-civil war; it allowed the mass production of goods and increased worker efficiency. People were now able to afford things that only the wealthy would have been able to afford in the past. On the other hand, the assembly line did indeed deskill many workers, and further reorganized how the people made a living.
In order for corporations to make money, they produced things related to the rising popular culture. [3] The rise of this new culture was due to an increase of cities, rise of a consumer society, and the change in morals and behavior. [4] During the twenties, more than half of the population lived in cities. New social classifications were created: laborers and managers, blue collar and white. [5] There was also a rise of leisure time, emergence of an urban middle class, technological advances, and an increase of wages.
