We Are What We Eat It was first coined by Anthelme Brillat-Savarin who wrote it, in Physiologie du Gout, ou Meditations de Gastronomie Transcendante, 1826. "Dis-moi ce que tu manges, je te dirai ce que tu es." [Tell me what you eat and I will tell you what you are]. Brillat-Savarin meant his quotations to be taken literally. He was stating that, that the food one eats has a bearing on what one's state of mind and health. Only later around 1920’s to 30’s it was translated to english and simplified as “We Are What We Eat” by nutritionist Victor Lindlahr, who was a strong believer in the idea that food controls health. In 1942, Lindlahr published “You Are What You Eat: how to win and keep health with diet”. This is believed to be the vehicle that took the phrase into the public consciousness. Now this quote thus not literally means that if you eat a carrot you are a carrot. No, what this means is that the quality of whatever food product we eat affects the quality of our health, both physically and mentally. It basically means that to have a fit and healthy life, we should eat healthy food with a healthy diet. This can be easily seen through people who eat both junk food and an unbalanced diet than with people who eat proper food and with a balanced diet. Those people, who eat an unbalanced diet, tend to be unhealthier inactive lives, getting sick more often, lack of energy, obesity and such. This is due to the lack of proper essential nutrients, vitamins and minerals, caused by the unbalanced diet. Continuing to those people, who have a proper balanced diet, they tend to have healthier active lives, getting sick less often, full of energy, fitter and such. This is due to the fact that the body is receiving the proper nutrients, vitamins and minerals. Now that I have basically explained the origin of the saying “We are what we eat” and
