In the beginning of the book the narrator describes seeing her mom digging through a trash can and then decides to have lunch with her. All of this talking with her mom makes her remember the horrible childhood she went through. When she was three years old her mom wasn’t watching her while letting her cook hotdogs. She ended up catching her dress on fire and had to be hospitalized for six days. Her dad took her away from the hospital without paying and soon after her mom was letting her cook again, as she called it, “Getting right back into the saddle.” At such a young age Jeannette didn’t take any anger out on her parents and soon took interest to fire.
Ruth realized that as much as she loved cooking that it made her under appreciate her father and not take time to learn about him or his interest because cooking was the big thing to her and her mother in their family. Doug learned that he didn’t have the family structure as Ruth did and he always yearned for family would listen and talk to him about his accomplishes and things he enjoyed. Ruth’s whole outlook on this chapter is to inform us about a part in her life as she does in every other chapter. It’s very hard to relate with Ruth’s made point in this chapter because I have never experienced a feeling like Ruth has. So I cannot really relate to how she feels.
Funny he mentions that because I can recall the same thing, I remember my mother telling me they were food, and food is not something you play with. He takes us back to his childhood almost allowing us to be in the same room with him as were are both holding a tortilla in out hands to keep our hands warm. Quickly moving to how his family would often tease him about the connection between him and a tortilla as a child to him as an artist today all the while not really being able to see the connection between the to built he goes with it. Thirdly, she illustrated us the process of how the whole family makes dumplings. Fourthly, when the dumplings ready for boiling, the next day was coming and she showed reader the way to eat it in traditional rules. Finally, after her grandmother passed away, she still uses her grandmother’s way to make dumpling and it became her family tradition. Connecting to my life, I did not experience the traditional New
The most prominent character quality of Ralph’s life was that he was generous; he loved to help build and help his family move along even when he was just 9 years old. He was also an eager learner and because of this he learned many useful talents such as how to ride a horse and how to shoot. (pg.222) he could also be very sneaky and deceitful at times as well (see pg. 154) but for most of this period in his life he was honest and felt bad when he did something wrong. Another good character trait was that he was extremely ambitious usually he would pick out tasks that carried a significant amount of weight sometimes even he could not complete them.
When Mama Elena gives Tita’s love to Rosaura, Tita pours her emotion over preparing her wedding cake, “ The moment they took a bite of the cake, everyone was flooded with a great wave of longing,” (39) The wedding cake that Tita prepared is filled with how strongly Tita feels that Mama Elena would not let her marry. When Tita was relatively free of Mama Elena and came back to take care of her, the food that Tita cooks has a peculiarity according to Mama Elena, “Mama Elena asked the doctor to lock the door and confided to him her suspicions about the bitterness of the soup,” (132) Mama Elena doesn’t know it, but the bitterness she is tasting is Tita’s pity. Tita feels sorry for her other being paralyzed and her stroke of bad luck, and is feeling that way while she prepares the food. The taste of the foods tells us how Tita feels while she is being controlled by Mama Elena and after she has already escaped from her
The author was brought up with the belief that her culture was “nothing”. That’s the way her mother, grandmother, and great grandmother referred to their family. Her mom always told her “Try new things”. They ate all different kinds of foods, from different cultures, and did what other ethnicities did. Their family didn’t always follow the cultural rules that they are “suppose” to follow.
He was sure though, that his mom always preferred that he be at home, no matter who was to tag along. He also knew – they would be well fed. “Will your mom make breakfast burritos?” Will asked. “You know she will, Will.” Garrison answered. They both chuckled at their pun.
Where I used to cook 3 course meals, now my daughter just asks me to taste the food for the right spices. The problem that I don’t cook anymore is that I had problems standing when I had to cook. I would have to stand and sit in intervals of 10 minutes because standing in one position would cause me to have pain in my neck, lower back, legs and feet. It got pretty tiresome just to cook a meal. Also, if I had to carry something over to the sink, I was always afraid to lose my grip.
When dinner was ready I tried to sit and talk to her but she stood up with her plate and gone she went to her room. I could not believe this atrocity was happening to me. Eventually, we had to go together to family reunions but this didn’t stop her from not talking to me. Sometimes my mother would not wait for me to come out of school and she would leave me home alone to go eat lunch with her sisters. This looked like revenge to me against what I had said before when I was sixteen.
