The table was also crowded due to other carers feeding other residents, and due to health safety reasons, all people that were unable to support themselves, and needed assistant had to sit on one table together, so the noise levels were unavoidable. Due to this issue it was important that I showed interest to the service user, so they knew I was listening and talking to them. I made sure I kept eye contact while talking/listening to them so they knew I were concentrating on them, keeping eye contact while communicating with them, and responding to what they said shows active listening. The service user was a dementia patient, so I made sure when using verbal communication, I talked clearly, and loud enough so they were able to hear me and understand me. I would also watch their facial expressions, so if they looked confused by what I had said then I would repeat what I said, or use hand gestures to try explain it, so it was easier for them to understand. At my work placement, they run an event called ‘fruity Friday’ where residents of the care home are able to go down to the cafeteria (if they wish to) to watch performances, have a glass of wine and fresh fruit. This helps residents socialise, and gives them something to enjoy. One Friday I was asked by the unit manager if I would take some residents down to fruity Friday. I used a range of different communication. Firstly I went and asked residents if they would like to come down and participate in fruity Friday, I approached them with a calm tone, and positive facial expressions (smiling) to encourage them to come with me and the other residents. It was important that I talked to all the residents, and explained where we were going and what were going to do. When I was talking to the whole group, I made sure I talked professionally in a manner they would understand, I did not use jargon, and slang or dialect language as the residents would not understand me. As there were some dementia patients in my group I made sure I talked to them separately so they understood fully where we going, so they did not get confused and
