Name: Section: B29 Date: This activity explores the issue of social influence—how the behavior of other people affects your behavior. Social Influence • What is conformity? Conformity is a type of social influence involving a change in belief or behavior in order to fit in with a group. This change is in response to real (involving the physical presence of others) or imagined (involving the pressure of social norms / expectations) group pressure. Basically, it can be summed up as yielding oneself to group pressures and differs based on the social setting and pressures thereof. A person adjusts his/her thinking or behavior to coincide with a particular group’s standard. Explaining Sherif’s Results • Why did Sherif’s participants change their estimates when they had to call out their answers in the presence of other people? Basically, the people did not want teir answers to be very different from the other people in the room. They did not want to feel like their answer was wrong or off. Humans really do worry about what other people think about them or what their impression is. So, to remain safe, they changed their original answers to match more closely to everyone else’s. They basically accepted everyone else’s opinion about the reality that they had experienced themselves over their own original answer. Explaining Asch’s Results • Why did Asch’s real participants deny the evidence of their eyes and report the obviously incorrect answer chosen by the other group members?
