Definition There are several terms needed to be defined before any stand is stated. “Non-verbal cues are the interpersonal process of sending and receiving information, both intentionally and unintentionally, without actually using written or spoken language.” as stated in Non Verbal Cues and the Golden Rule (Ali, 2010). Six subcategories under visual, auditory and time are derived from non-verbal cues: 1) Facial Expression 2) Gestures and Postures 3) Vocal characteristics 4) Personal appearance 5) Touch 6) Time and space. In contrary, verbal cues are concise phrases, often just one or two words that are used as an alternate method of communicating task information as mentioned by (Landin, 1994). The word “dependable” here I perceive as that the verbal cues or non-verbal cues that uncover the real meaning which the sender intended to encode is chosen by the receiver for decoding. Also, what counts as an effective communication? According to an Internet source “Communication and Leadership”, communication is the exchange and flow of information and ideas from one person to another; it involves a sender transmitting an idea, information, or feeling to a receiver (U.S. Army, 1983). Effective communication occurs only if the receiver understands the exact information or idea that the sender intended to transmit. Are verbal cues or nonverbal cues more dependable? In my daily observation, I can see that nonverbal cues occupy their importance in communication in which people often depend on the nonverbal cues to guess or get the intended or exact meaning or idea of the sender. Also when verbal cues and non-verbal cues contradict with each other or verbal cues are absent, people tend to believe the non-verbal cues because they are natural, unconscious language that broadcast our true feelings and intentions in any given moment.
