There are other issues in our broader society that will affect the lives of children and young people. Unemployment can lead to economic crisis resulting in difficulties in funding food, bills and cloths for children. Conditions in health or a cultural background can cause exclusion from certain activities in the setting. Being aware of the positive and negative issues that influence children’s lives is part of a practitioner’s role. Some other possible impacts of social, economic and cultural factors that will impact on the lives of children and young people can be as follows: Personal choice: A family may decide to live in a way that differs from others such as communal living or same gender parents. A travelling community child may have their schooling affected if they leave and join new schools as they travel. Housing and community: There can be a negative affect on children’s development if they have poor quality housing or cramped conditions. Families can become isolated if they live in a community where children have challenging anti-social behaviours, this can make them unwilling to let their child play in the community. Health facilities and education can be tricky to access if transport is limited. Health status: If a parent has a health problem the child could be their carer reducing their opportunities to play and socialise with friends. Existing conditions such as asthma or kidney disease may lead to a child’s education being supported accordingly. Disability: The disability of an adult could lead to poverty or mean the child is the carer. The disability of a child could affect educational provision. Support or respite may be required for the child or young person. Religious beliefs and customs: These may exclude children from settings or mean they attend specific settings.
