There are many factors that influence a child/young person development. Development may affect before birth or after birth. Antenatal – Is known as the period from conception to birth. During this period mainly the life style of the mother affects the development of the child. If the mother smokes, takes drugs, becomes ill or suffers from stress this can result in premature birth and health problems for the baby such as -: low birth weight, undeveloped organs, problems with sight and hearing which will result in the delay their development. Perinatal – this is the actual time of birth. Babies born before 37 weeks are called premature babies. They may need intensive care which will affect the development. Ex: Lack of oxygen during birth will affect the development of the baby. Health problems - If a child suffers from health issues such as asthma, it may make them unable to take part in activities which will affect the over roll development. A child with Learning difficulties, physical disabilities or sensory deficiencies (blindness and deafness)will make it unable for them to socialize and work with other children which is a major part in helping their development, also they could be withdrawn and make them feel like they don’t belong. The exposure to unhealthy environment and food increase the chance of children coming in to contact with infectious diseases. This in result may affect the development of the child.
