The colonists wanted independence from Britain because of many reasons. It all started with the Salutary Neglect. Colonists were, for the most part, left to look after their own affairs. Trade between the American colonists and other nations was heavily restricted, and Colonists were to trade exclusively with England, Scotland and Ireland. Salutary Neglect allowed Great Britain to turn a blind eye to illegal trade activities with other countries, which were difficult and expensive to enforce. Following the Salutary Neglect was the Contract Theory. The Contract Theory analyzes how parties to a contract make decisions under uncertain conditions, and when to perform or not perform actions. Unlike Thomas Hobbes, John Locke believed that human nature is characterized by reason and tolerance.…show more content…
Locke’s arguments for the social contract and for the right of citizens to revolt against their king were enormously influential on the democratic revolutions that followed, especially on Thomas Jefferson, and the founders of the United States. These ideas were utilized in the writing of the Declaration of Independence and in turn began the American Revolutionary War. The French and Indian War lasted for four years with the British and Colonist winning the war. This led Britain into severe debt, and they couldn’t figure out how to pay it off. Therefore, they began taxing the Colonists because the war was fought to protect them and it was fought on their land. Tension started building between the two of them when the British government started passing many acts and placing taxes on the Colonists without anyone representing them.
