'Questioning enables teachers to check learners' understanding. It also benefits learners as it encourages enitgagement and focuses their thinking on key concepts and ideas.' (Kyriacou 1995 in Desforges 1995, pg. 126) I am of the opinion that the idea children should work in mixed ability groups is not always a viable option. I feel it is important to take into account the personalities of the children, as learning may be inhibited if one child is particularly domineering or intimidating.
Children are put into groups in order to give them the best learning potential and for their learning to be appropriate for their age and level of understanding. Some children can be easily distracted, so would work better in a smaller group with adult supervision to keep them on task and encouragement them to keep focused. Potential issues that may arise in group learning could be that some children may take over the group and always answer before others, which in turn not all children in the group get to put their opinions, idea's or views across. It could cause ineffective communication between the group if a few are not understanding the task or some may be shy and introvert. Due to the nature of working in teams, children can sometimes find that they are not working effectively, which negatively impacts on their learning, and their ability to progress.
Frustration at their own inability to communicate effectively can lead to behavioural problems. •Social – Talking out loud helps children to work through ideas, feelings and frustrations. In doing this children start to empathise and see other peoples point of view, and gradually become able to think about other people’s needs and feelings. This helps children to develop socially acceptable behaviour and build their confidence. Communicating with other children or adults in social situations helps children to understand what is expected of them and to enjoy participating.
Firstly, the ideas of being isolated from a friendship group is a daunting vision for many youngsters, and are thus willing to adopt the groups norms and values if it means they will acquire popularity or just to be part of a group. The peer group is a secondary agent of socialisation which means they develop and further reinforce the learning one was once subjected to in early childhood. A peer group that holds good values, like hard work may encourage its members into positive things, yet one that has detrimental values may lead to deviant behaviour. In spite of this influence, some may argue that the media in today’s media saturated world has become the most influential agent of socialisation. Stereotypes related to gender are regularly portrayed in the media.
3.3 Help children and young people to understand and respect other people’s feelings and points of view. Children and young people need to learn to understand and respect the feelings, emotions and behaviours of others to help them gain an understanding about their actions and consequences. Young children might find this difficult as their understanding will not be as developed enough for them to put themselves in the position of others, but as children grow and learn they gain a greater experience of this and often older pupils will enjoy opportunities to debate and discuss different points of view in lesson time and in social situations. We often speak to them in school about thinking of the consequences of their actions and how they might have affected others. This way it keeps everybody equal in terms of wearing the correct clothing and may reduce or even stop young people/children from being discriminated. 2.2/2.4 I think that the impact of prejudice & discrimination could have a major influence on a young person/child when it comes to their learning. It could have an affect on their own self-esteem by making them feel down and low. This might make them want to stop learning altogether and start becoming disruptive to the class and the teacher. Their social development might become affected because if they feel they are being discriminated, then they might not want to play along with other and may just keep themselves to themselves.
For children and young people to develop into adults with a high level of self-esteem and confidence they need to be taught life skills that enable them to build resilience, cope with life's challenges and have the capacity to accept constructive criticism and fend off negative comments for what they are without association. They also need to learn how to celebrate successes as well as coping with failure. 6.1, 6.3, 6.4 It is vital that children are shown how to have the confidence to express their feelings and the ability to say no if they do not like the way they are being treated. There will be occassions where adults need to intervene but learning how to cope in challenging situations is vital to their future well being. Giving children a safe, nurturing environment in which they are able to learn how to use the tools required to build resilience is paramount.
Assessments are test that are given so that the teacher can see what level the child is on and to see what path do they need to take to start educating the child properly. When a child is assessed properly time will not be wasted by simply putting activities in from of them. Children learn in different ways and those with disabilities have to have the correct instruction to help him or her. There are weaknesses of assessments as well. Assessments can be very time consuming and depending on the child they may get restless while taking them.
