The Effect of Television on Children Charmaine Gilmore Liberty University The Effect of Television on Children Does your child watch television? Just look around. Televisions are everywhere! We cannot escape the onslaught of televisions. The twentieth century is the age of technology. Our children are exposed to televisions at home, school, church etc. How can we keep our children focused if they are overexposed to the media? Television can enrich our society by educating our children, but it has a negative effect on our children as well. Overexposure to television is detrimental to the physical, spiritual, and mental health, and intelligence of our kids. Televisions, televisions are everywhere. Americans find it difficult to live without television. They are unable to socialize without watching television. They feel kids should be included when parents are watching since they might miss out on an educational experience. (Gilbert H. Muller, Harvey S. Wiener, 2005, p. 294). An American family has an average of 4 televisions per household. Our society has to “keep up with the Joneses”, so we make sure that our kids have televisions in their rooms. Now we are leaning towards materialism. Materialism is a desire to acquire material goods in order to be happy. This is how our society evaluates their success in life. Some people have televisions in their bathrooms too! A bathroom is a room to relax in, not for your brain to be overstimulated. We as parents have to limit the accessibility of televisions to prevent our kids to be overexposed to televisions. . “According to recent Nielsen Media Research data, the average child or adolescent watches an average of 3 hours of television per day.” ("Children, Adolescents and Television," 2001, p. 423).
