Technology Proposal: Faculty Professional Development Introduction Imagine being a college professor who was just informed that they would be teaching several of their courses fully online. Not having any online teaching experience and limited technology knowledge they would become quickly overwhelmed. My goal is to bridge the gap between technology and online teaching. As an Instructional Designer I spend my day working with faculty on technical problems in their online classes. The majority of these technical problems are user error related. While I am quickly able to identify the problem and show the professor how to correct it this does not provide a long term solution to the challenges faculty face. My technology proposal is to offer full-time and adjunct online faculty a Certificate in Online Teaching and Development. This certificate would be offered through Desire2Learn, which is the college's Learning Management System (with optional face-to-face meetings on Friday mornings) and be specifically designed to assist faculty in the development and implementation of best practices in online course delivery. This certificate would not be required for faculty to teach online, however it will be advertised as a wonderful opportunity to learn how to teach online and how to use technology. This certificate would cover courses that go over the following subject: Fundamentals of Online Teaching Technology and Online Design Advanced learning of D2L Multimedia and Communication Tools for Online Teaching The whole certificate can be completed in one semester and would be offered in the spring and fall semester, with the potential for additional course offerings to be added in spring 2011. Once the certificate is completed, the instructor will be rewarded $150.00. This certificate would be limited to 20 instructors per semester due to funding.
