Elementary Toy Whistle Human Resources Task 2 Maggie Miklos June 10, 2014 MEMORANDUM Date: June 10, 2014 To: Barbie Mattel, CEO From: Maggie Miklos, Toy Division Manager Subject: Elementary Toy Whistle I am in receipt of a memo from our quality control manager citing an issue with the toy whistles schedule to ship to South America the end of the week. During the required inspection the whistles were found to contain a higher amount of lead than what is allowable under U.S. regulations for children. The whistles are produced under the elementary toy division and the cost to reproduce the whistle would be $100,000. We take a risk if audited by the U.S. agency that regulates the lead content in toys. The fines and legal ramifications would well exceed the $100,000 to replace the product. In the long term, if one of the whistles made a child sick, would make this a willful knowledge claim generating even higher liability cost of litigation including fines, court fees. Option 3 The advantage of reproducing the whistle from recycled plastic would be removal of the lead is removed. It would also show our company’s commitment for the environment by using recycled materials verses material that consists of lead. Producing the whistle from recycled plastic product is less costly and would accelerate the production to meet the timeline for distribution. Most importantly, provide the children with a quality risk free product. The disadvantage to changing the material makeup of the product would be if the group purchasing the product wanted the initial material without the option to substitute. The financial impact of the alternate product would be less than the initial $100,000 which would assist the company in minimizing their loss.
