Feeling that she needed to socialise, Cady’s parents enrolled her to North Shore High school. On her first day of North Shore High school, Cady was often left out and she was unfamiliarised with the school’s surroundings and people. On the second day, Cady had become friends with two social outcasts, Janis Ian and Damian. Janis and Damian had misled Cady into thinking that they were taking to G14 for her Health Education class but instead, they brought her to the back of the school where they skipped class. This is where Janis had stated that they were friends and Cady stayed with them.
G soon came up with a game making the kids realize that they all had a lot in common. When Eva went to go visit her father there was a big sign of improvement with her wanting to learn because she stated to explain what was in the book to her father. When Mrs.G gives them the assignment to read Anne Frank it piques her interest and she begins to focus more on her academics. Esme deals with a student’s parent. This is one thing that has always worried me about my teaching career. While Esme took the library away because something had been stolen, the parent felt insulted that the teacher did not trust her child. An author is going to the school; she is also African American. This is good, as the school is almost completely all black.

She found that many of the younger generation were truly shocked and awed by Henrietta's family, and grateful to have the book written. Some members of the younger generation also read the book out loud to their elders, which opened a dialogue in the family. Tragedy In The Summer Melinda Sordino Came into Merryweather High School as an outcast, but she wasn’t always an outcast. In the summer she faced a traumatic incident; the terrible beast himself, Andy Evens, raped her. Through out the whole book Laurie Anderson, the author, shows a lot of symbolism showing Melinda’s growth. Melinda’s mouth, the janitor’s closet, and plants are some of the symbols in the book. After the incident Melinda stopped talking completely, and caring about her appearance.
Teachers have been getting replaced left and right because of their inability to control the students in the classroom. Many parents are removing their children out of Augusta Schools in order for them to have a better chance of being successful. Also because Augusta is a failing school, teachers fresh out of college come teach at the school for a minimum of two years. After their two years are up most teachers would leave to go teach at a school of their choosing. On the other hand, replacing these teachers maybe was a good move made by the State Department.
Laurie had started off questioning the wave and what it meant and she soon sees what it’s doing to the school and her friends.
