Eric Tripp Mr. Eric Baker Composition 1 October 8, 2014 Going Down Hill Education is one of the main foundations for a child’s development and future. Failure at school is a serious concern for children and their parents. For many years the Augusta Public School District has been looked at as a failing school, but has been improving at a slow rate. Both schools are struggling academically and have an extremely low success rate. But, on the other hand coming to Augusta would be good for those whole like to be in a comfortable environment. Being at a smaller school lets many build a closer relationship with their teachers and plus students are recognized more for their hard working efforts. Three days out of the week the State Department of Education comes and monitors the teachers and students in the learning environment. Many of the students in the classroom extremely lazy and show little to no care about their grades. During class students will show disrespect towards the teacher by sleeping, disrupting the class, and starting drama. While this is all going on inside the classroom, the people from the State Department are writing down what they see and are deciding to make changes for the future. Teachers have been getting replaced left and right because of their inability to control the students in the classroom. Many parents are removing their children out of Augusta Schools in order for them to have a better chance of being successful. Also because Augusta is a failing school, teachers fresh out of college come teach at the school for a minimum of two years. After their two years are up most teachers would leave to go teach at a school of their choosing. On the other hand, replacing these teachers maybe was a good move made by the State Department. For the past two years the school has improved test scores by 28% because of the new learning methods teachers have presented to the students. Whenever people heard Augusta High School, what came to peoples mind was ghetto, unsuccessful, and troublemakers. It feels like most students at this school focus more on their friends and situations outside of school other than academics. Another problem a couple of years ago was the clothing students were wearing. Most of the students would wear unsuitable clothing; either something was too small or there was inappropriate writing on a shirt. Also there was countless number of bullying reports because of clothing. The students who could not afford nice clothes were usually picked on and taunted. It started to get so out of hand that parents started pulling their kids out of Augusta and transferring them to another school. So to prevent bullying problems and students from wearing irrelevant clothing the school established a new dress code policy where students were required to wear uniforms. This new policy helped reduce the amount of bullying throughout the school and also made the school look more professional. Now that the students are following the dress code properly another problem has emerged. Now there is a problem with students bringing their cellphones to school. It is a state law not to bring cell phones on school campus, but students bring them anyway. This is a problem because cell phones are a distraction to the student.
