Silence in the Turmoil of Crisis Case Study 1) In 2009, there were 714 salmonellosis cases and nine deaths in 43 states led by PCA’s salmonella-tainted peanut products that were used in more than 3,900 food items. PCA’s failed manufacturing practices included unsanitary premises and improper equipment maintenance. These unsanitary conditions proved to test positive for salmonella, beginning their crisis and an organizational communication failure. Although PCA was aware of the complication with food poisoning, they offered minimum communication with the public. PCA offered no public statements about its product recall until January 13, 2009, months after salmonellosis cases had been found to be a result of their company’s practices.
McDonald’s negligence of the brewing of the coffee at such high temperatures shows that they disregard the reasonable care that they owe to their consumers. This was not the first time that a consumer of McDonald’s coffee had been injured, there had been 700 victims before Mrs. Liebeck case and that showed that McDonalds had no intention on reducing the temperature of their coffee which again shows negligence on behalf of McDonalds. Mrs. Liebeck was a very sincere and a nice person as observed by the video her intention
No Impact Man Colin Beavan made the ultimate life-changing sacrifice by doing the No Impact Project. In the book No Impact Man, Beavan’s methods were probably a little improbable to the average Joe. One of the methods Beavan did was turning off electricity completely in his apartment to stop releasing carbon in the air. Also, Beavan bought food from only a 250 miles radius and only used reusable grocery bags. Though Colin Beavan completely changed his lifestyle to make a positive impact on the environment, not everyone can completely change because of the lack of time, discipline or capital, but we can always cut down on the negative effects that we apply on the earth.
GMO Salmon is genetically modified salmon. “The two grocery chains are now part of more than 9,000 stores across the country that have rejected carrying the GM AquAdvantage® salmon regardless of whether the U.S. Food and Drug Administration approves it for public consumption, which it has not yet officially done.” (News Desk, 2014, par. 3) Corporate social responsibility (CSR) is management’s obligation to make choices and take actions that will contribute to the welfare and interests of society, not just the organization (Daft, 2012, p. 151). By making this non-programmed decision and choosing to not carry GMO Salmon Kroger clearly took a stand for the consumers. Ethical Issue Organization Has Faced In 2010, The People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) asked during a shareholder’s meeting, if Kroger Corporation had plans of using a less cruel way of slaughtering
Every Dr. that went through this journey with Morgan and kept track of his health are stunned and that people shouldnot eat fast food and one Dr. even says that Morgan should not eat fast food for one whole year to give his body time to recuperate. It takes 2 months of detox eating to get his liver and cholesterol back to normal function. My take from this movie?
That same foundation has worked tirelessly to successfully ban smoking in all public places including bars, restaurants, workplaces, and even public streets. Their logic is that banning smoking will cleanse the air of impurities that smokers choose to ingest, but should not inflict onto others. The unfortunate truth is that not every business wants to place a ban on smoking. In the early 2000s when smoking bans in bars grew more rigid, the owners and managers of nightlife establishments complained that business took a sharp downward spiral as a result. People could no longer smoke in establishments that served food and customers did not want to come in for drinks, only to step outside whenever they wanted to smoke.
Something that surprised me is that both of Gawande’s article connect. For example, in “Slow Ideas” he writes that a simple solution of sugar, salt, and water could eliminate cholera in Dhaka, but the solution wasn’t popular, many didn’t use it and people still died. Then, in “Big Med” Gawande writes that doctors know a solution for migraines, but doctors don’t use it or tell their patients about it. Here are ideas that could help people have a better living yet they are slow in being
You people allowed this to happen, are killing off the animals, soiling drinking water, and making it near impossible for anything to survive in the waters because of the pollution and all you can say is that nothing is being done immediately because of FUNDING?" EPA - Smith: (wondering why this reporter is so emotional over the subject - Smith chooses his words carefully): "Yes Mr. Poseidon, we cannot just have people work for free on this project, it all comes down to funding in the end." Poseidon (obviously irritated and ired at this point): "I shall see what the rest of your America says about the pollution they are facing, and then get back in touch with you with potential solutions." (Poseidon basically cuts the conversation short and leaves Mr. Smith's
Trans Fat December 12, 2012 Trans Fat One of the ways Americans can avoid health problems caused by trans fat is for the government to heavily regulate trans fat. A couple of years ago consumers weren’t able to determine how much trans-fat was in products. Companies weren’t telling costumers how much of the hydrogenated oil ingredient was in their products. Because consumers weren't aware of this Americans were eating about five to six grams per day, Americans did not even know the damage they were making to their diet and also the health problem that would arise in the future. The daily amount recommended is less than 0.5 grams (Kalin, 2011).
In the 70ties Nestle has faced the law suit. The cause of the controversy was that the Nestle Infant formula was partially the reason of the death of 3rd World kids. Its partial involvement was due to the fact that Nestle marketing strategy wasn’t adjusted to the specifics of 3rd World, they treated new markets as the local one. The aspects of country economical and development level as well as the environment, culture and social living aspects weren’t taken into consideration while entering the market. However, the situation had place in the 70ties during different marketing era which was concerned mostly about product not social responsibility
