GOD’S PROVISION FOR SPIRITUAL GROWTH In one’s spiritual life, they may take a step back and ask the question of how they can grow on a deeper level with God. Spiritual growth is a long journey going on into eternity. As followers of Christ we must cooperate with the work God has begun in our lives. Spiritual growth isn’t primarily our work, it is God’s spirit that begins the work and we must cooperate and learn through it. The first key to spiritual growth is the scripture. Studying, knowing, applying the scripture to one’s Christian life is absolutely necessary if there is going to be any spiritual growth. The scriptures are the “word of God” as it says in 1 Thessalonians 2:13. In all reality the scripture originated with and are the product of God. Not only is the scripture God’s word, but also it is accompanied with God’s power to “perform its work”. This is one of the reasons that the scripture is so necessary for spiritual growth. In Ephesians 6:17 the scripture is called the “sword of the spirit”. The context is speaking of the necessity of wielding the word of God in spiritual warfare. The Holy Spirit is going to use the word of God in bringing the believer to maturity. To neglect the scripture would be to neglect the Spirit’s main instrument in spiritual growth. In Leroy Eims’ book The Basic Ingredients for Spiritual Growth, he writes on the scripture as God’s inexhaustible resource. He says, “In this wonderful Book we receive light to keep us on the right path. It is a lamp unto our feet. It is spiritual food-our milk and meat to nourish our souls”. He goes on later to say that the Scripture must take priority in our spiritual growth. In Romans 10:17 it says, “So then faith comes by hearing, and hearing by the Word of God.” The scripture is our shield of faith and our faith is produced through God’s word.
