Physical punishments, such as, spanking, hitting, or smacking are strategies many parents may use on their children to teach them behaviors. In many cultures, many parents claim that spanking a child is considered acceptable way because it can induce them to learn. However in the United States, many families think that the idea of hitting children in order to force them to learn is unnecessary. In my point of view, hitting children is completely wrong because it may have several negative impacts on them behaviorally and socially. Using physical punishment on children may have many passive influences on their behavior. Apparently, Spanking would cause damages on self-esteem and self-confidence. Hitting children by the people who are supposed to protect them, it induces them to believe that there is something wrong with them, consequently decrease on their self-esteem. Also when children are scared from getting hit by their parents, they become frequently anxious and uncertain which may destroy their self-confidence. Besides, spanking would teach children to lie; when the children do something wrong and they know that they may receive physical punishment by their parents, they tend to lie about it in order to avoid physical harm. On the other hand, if the parents give their children the opportunity to talk and discuss the issue with them, children would be more likely to say the truth. In addition that, spanking would increase violence at schools, because it shows children that “stronger” is right, therefore, they may tend to use the same strategy with their classmates, hence, it would increase bullying between students. Despite that many parents believe that spanking children would motivate children to learn, hitting children physically would have several destructive impacts on their social lives.
