Germany was plagued by many problems at the end of war and most of them were attributed to the then German government. Taking advantage of the problems Hitler offered solutions that he would implement once he came into power. It was when Germany was defeated in World War I that these anti Semitism sentiments started to arise. Many of the Weimar politicians who signed the treaty were Jews. Foreign minister of the Weimar government who was also a Jew was assassinated and killed. So the myth that Jews were responsible for all the problems and the defeat in World War I was born. In 1919, Hitler had written that systematic legitimate opposition can only be done through sensible anti Semitism (The Holocaust, n.d). He blamed Jews for the defeat in war and also asserted that Jews stabbed us in the back just to seize power and control German people. Hitler also declared that Jews wanted to undermine the Aryan Race through communism and capitalism. In his book Mein Kampf, (My Struggle) he further extended this hatred for Jews when he said that Jews are an evil race who wants to dominate the world. Nazi policy treated Jews as “parasitic vermin” who are only worthy of eradication. Nazi’s added racial anti Semitism to their political ideology. Jan 1933 Hindenburg plans to get Nazi’s on his side As part of the deal Hindenburg makes Hitler as the chancellor of Germany. Feb 1933 Reichstag is set on fire by a Dutch communist who is also caught red handed. This gave Hitler a wonderful opportunity in two ways • Imprison communists who he hated along with Jews. • Gave Nazi’s the opportunity to say that Germany was in danger from the communists during election campaign. Overall this helped them in winning more seats in election. March 1933 Elections are held and Nazi party wins 44% of votes This win did not give hi majority in the Reichstag, but it did allow him to get the Enabling Act passed. March 1933 Enabling act is passed in the Reichstag which gives the right to Hitler to make his own laws. A very critical event, Hitler attained absolute power after this act was passed.
