Cell Phones in School By Jack Wallace There is a lot of controversy with school administrations whether cell phones should be allowed in schools by students. Cell phones are not just for calling and texting, but mini-computers with access to information and technology to write documents, reports and even print. Cell phones also provide calculators and calendars (calendars help to keep track of projects, assignments and other school related functions). There are a lot of pros and cons to this debate of cell phones in school, I personally feel that cell phones should be allowed in school as part of a learning resource. Some of the pros that will be discussed are research, safety, during and after school use.
Furthermore, research on specific topics and websites like dictionary.com would be very useful for students using cell phones because they would have it right there with them at all times and wouldn’t need to go to a computer lab. Overall, students at (name of high school) should be able to use cell phones during school hours because they are a learning tool and help in various situations during school. Also, cell phones are needed in case of emergencies and teach students responsibility. Cell phones teach students the when and where to do things. For instance, being responsible would be getting work done and not talking or playing games on the phone.
The positive effect it has had on the overall classroom environment cannot be discounted. Allowing cell phones on school premises will allow parents to keep in touch with their children and enhance students’ learning experience in the classroom. School districts around the country are slowly warming up to the idea that cell phones can be a viable learning tool. Using the internet access on their cell phones, high school students in Sioux Rapids, Iowa for example are using twitter-like technology, named backchannel, to participate in classroom discussions. Instead of being a distraction, the chatter feeds into the main discourse, which is monitored by the teacher and integrated into the classroom discussion.
However, text messaging has been a major problem with students texting in class interfering with the disruption of their learning. Most teachers express how they feel about cell phones being a distraction to others, however very few students have complaints about the use of cell phones in class. Text messaging in class should be allowed by choice of the students, it can easily be discreet and the possibility of an emergency. Text messaging in class should be allowed by the choice of students. In the argument “Tapping into Text Messaging” by Janet Kornblum, says teens, techies and other early adopters leading the charge to text say it is a great way to communicate when they are too busy to talk or when making a call would be rude or impractical.
Mr. Magee, The question of whether cell phones should be allowed in schools has been debated over the years. Most school administrations regard cell phone use as disruptive and distracting, and have implemented policies that prohibit using them on school grounds. There are benefits to letting the student body use their cell phones at school. Your parents can reach you in the event of an emergency, and vice versa. If in danger, we can reach the authorities or a medical provider.
Cell phones make it possible for students in touch with family and friends. A student can call home and ask a family member to come pick them up if they are sick or bring them something they forgot. Also, cellphones allow parents to keep track of their children’s whereabouts before, during and after school. And of course there’s always the possibility of a student needing to contact a parent because of a dangerous situation. Thus, having a cell phone is like having a guardian angel.
They will support all steps of the writing process/writer's workshop in one device. Recording Apps will allow students to brainstorm ideas before they are lost and can be referenced throughout the writing process. The iPads will allow for one-step quick presentations as opposing to brainstorming and drafting on paper, and then typing. Finally, by publishing student work as ePub documents the students have a portfolio of saved work to share with peers and parents to show writing growth throughout the
Students like to enjoy texting during their classes but some schools however got a problem with it. I can understand that teachers come to school to educate students because it is their job and they find it disrespectful if a student isn’t listening, but have you thought about how cell phones could change student’s life? Many school system got problems with students using their cell phones during school hours, they also got a policy for students not using their phones during school hours, and I can understand it but do you know that using phones during classes can change student’s life? Well it can think about a time when you needed a dictionary and the school ran out of them and you had a phone with dictionary software but you couldn’t use your phone so you had to wait 30 minutes for nothing. Think of another time when you had to contact your parents for an emergency but you didn’t know their number and your phone had their number but you couldn’t use your phone because of the school policy.
Most people, however, argue students should not be allowed to fill out evaluation forms. Although ratings by students can improve teachers in many ways, students should not be grading the professors since students don’t know about teaching. Their ratings might reflect personal opinions of whether they liked the teacher or not instead of focusing on how well the teacher taught, and students do not look back at their efforts they spent in the class. Sites have been created where students can express their opinions about their professors. The website named www.ratemyprofessor.com is one of these sites that allow students to give ratings and comments about their professors.
This new policy helped reduce the amount of bullying throughout the school and also made the school look more professional. Now that the students are following the dress code properly another problem has emerged. Now there is a problem with students bringing their cellphones to school. It is a state law not to bring cell phones on school campus, but students bring them anyway. This is a problem because cell phones are a distraction to the student.
