I make sure I go by all these in my work role so I know I’m safeguarding the children to the best of my ability. Observing and assessing children’s development is essential so you are alert to anything that is not expected of that child at their development, we should also keep parents/careers up to date. Duty of care contributes to the safeguarding contributes to the safeguarding or protection of individuals by protecting them from any harm weather it’s physical or psychological. IN our nursery we safeguard children by * Setting clear boundaries for children’s behaviour and using strategies to discourage behaviour which could harm others. We do this according to their developmental stage.
To the pupils that attend the school my duty of care is to prevent harm, to use my skills, professional abilities and experience to report any concerns over their health, to note any changes in their behaviour and bring to the attention of the team and to record any unexplained marks/bruises. It is also my duty of care to promote their rights and to work with them as individuals and to listen to them. This extends to respecting the rights of the families in respecting their cultural beliefs and values of the parents and family. This also contributes to the safeguarding of the individual and protecting them from any possible harm or risk. My duty of care towards my work colleagues is to not put them at risk of harm e.g.
In a childcare setting there are many policies and procedures put in place to safeguard children from danger and harm. The child protection policy was put in place to ensure each child is observed closely and no child is suffering from significant harm within their home environment. The setting work with parents to ensure the safety of children is considered. The health and safety policy was put in place to ensure the setting is a safe environment for children to be in. All equipment must be set out for the correct age ranges, all equipment regularly cleaned, ensure there are no broken toys etc.
As a carer we need to put the needs and interests of our residents at the centre of our practice and thinking. We need to meet their needs and assure they are not put in danger by using unsafe practice. Aiii. Within the organisation Duty of Care involves the resident(providing care, protect from harm, maintain rights, promote their interests), the residents family/friends and the organisation itself, including our work colleagues. We need to work safely, uphold the law, report concerns & allegations, maintain professional boundaries and maintain confidentiality.
This legislation is also about working with parents and other professionals and keeping everyone safe. Childcare Act 2006 The three main key drivers of this act is to reduce child poverty, reduce inequalities between young children and to improve the wellbeing for young children. It supports parents to have the ability to work, and also focus on the provision of good quality childcare for the working parents. This act is based on the EYFS and uses it. Children’s Act 2004 The act and the Every Child Matters act is giving a messages that safeguarding children is a shared responsibility.
Confidentiality is imperative to building trusting relationships with the children, their families and even other staff and professionals. It is important that you are approachable to parents and guardians and that they are able to put their trust in you, e.g. Parents sometimes feel the need to inform practitioners about a sensitive subject that had upset their child. Although other members of staff may need to know that the child may be upset, they don’t necessarily need to know why. If this trust is breached and you were to tell somebody, the word of the situation could spread quickly and eventually get back to the child/parent, upsetting them even further.
Policies and Procedures – having clear rules and boundaries ensures that both adults and children (who are able to understand) know how to conduct themselves within the setting, by this I mean not behaving in ways that could cause distress or harm to others within the setting. Conforming to Legislation – by adhering to laws such as health and safety and safeguarding, I am working within the law which is there to protect children and those who work with children. Understanding signs of neglect/abuse – as a child care professional, I have a duty of care to all children that should I notice any signs/indicators of abuse or neglect that I report it
Residents are encouraged to have friends visit the home. This is “normal” practice and the young people must be supervised. All areas of the home must be kept free from hazards such as trolleys, wires, cleaning equipment etc.
