SECURITY THREATS IN SCHOOLS 1) The threat of organized crime and terrorism Organized crime is a Major and growing problem. It is increasingly becoming a threat with National security dimensions and implications. Organized crimes also costs a lot to our society in terms of lost revenue, at a time when there is increasing demand on the government to provide social services. Organized crime feeds on and stimulates corruption as well as, and weakens public trust in government. It is a threat to the rule of law and damaging to the welfare of societies. Terrorism is first and foremost a crime. In any case, terrorism always involves elements of criminal behaviour or at least behaviour outside the collective norms of most contemporary societies. The threat of organized crime and terrorism is becoming a multifaceted threat more so with radicalization of youths, who are in our schools, a convoluted web of secret recruitment of school children into terrorism. Some non – governmental charitable organizational have also hidden behind charity work while secretly enticing young people into terrorism. It is incumbent upon every school head to vet organizations that seek to support our Institutions. Whereas we may look elsewhere for a terrorist, it is apparent that they live and stay amongst us. Some of these people are our students, brothers and sisters. Provision of information and building a working synergy with local police commanders has become more important now than ever. The school management boards, Parents Teachers Association, the teachers and parents must all bear individual responsibility to keep our schools safe. 2) Transnational organized crime and child trafficking 3) Kidnapping: The incidence of kidnapping has become a grave security matter both locally and even internationally.
