It has been suggested that babies sleep longer as an adaptive measure to make their parents life a lot easier. This is shown as adults are then able to clean, sleep and eat to ensure better survival. This is supported by the fact that premature babies whose brains are very underdeveloped spend about ninety percent in REM. A one year old will now have established a gradual maturation of sleep EEG patterns thus they begin to look more like adults. They are usually able to sleep at night and therefore have fewer naps during the day totalling about 10-12 hours of sleep a day.
The reason why those who exercise live, because they are not getting fat over time as someone would be by just sitting at the couch all day. If you are obese you have more physical and possibly metal problems than a normal weight person and the physical problems are mostly severe and can cause premature death. Just by exercising you can avoid all these horrible diseases and early death. Studies show that exercising improves memory in older people. In conclusion exercising is a proven way to decrease the risk of all these medical conditions and they should be taken action with other factors as
For example, two diseases that develop from too little protein are Kwashiorkor and Marasmus, and too diseases that develop because of too much carbohydrates and lipids are Diabetes and Cardiovascular Disease. When consuming too much or too little of a macronutrient it can also result in a stunt in growth, especially in children, a insufficient amount of energy, and either weight loss or weight gain. People also tend to gain a low immune system making them more susceptible to
As part of the same (Noland and others, 2009) study, the conclusion of a later school day as a solution for teenagers was reached as “previous studies have determined that people who go to bed and rise at the same time each day, including the weekend, have a higher quality of sleep and are less likely to report sleep deprivation” (p. 229). This conclusion helps to prove that the idea of later school hours is beneficial. If students tend to get up late every day and get to bed at a late
It affects both their mood and their ability to think and their ability to perform and react appropriately." Said Dr. Mary Carskadon the Director of Chronobiology/Sleep Research at the E.P. (pbs.org.). Sleep is a form of food for the brain and without it people seem to be less coherent and even make poor decisions. This is worsened in teens because the body is still growing and is demanding more time to repair and rebuild its self through sleep.
Does sleeping too little lead to weight gain? Two common problems in today’s world are getting enough sleep and the obesity epidemic. A normal amount of sleep is around 7-8hrs these days but can vary depending on the age of the person (Horne). This amount can sometimes be hard for individuals to get because of their work and/or extracurricular activities. As the hours of sleep deprivation add up, the human body changes in various ways.
Even caffeine may not have a significant effect, and may actually contribute to sleepiness. When we come down off of caffeine, we’re more tired than we were to begin with.” You would be a much happier person if you got the amount of sleep you needed. Feeling tired an exhausted can make you grumpy and irritable. You might end up taking your exhaustion out on other people when it’s not even their fault. You may usually be a very happy person but since you are sleep deprived you won’t be that happy person.
Obesity is caused by many factors, one of these consequences is one that people often overlook, poor sleeping habits. The quality and duration of sleep amongst modern society has decreased in the last fifty years. According to self-reported sleep durations presented in a study titled “The Impact of Sleep Deprivation on Hormones and Metabolism,” people have gone from sleeping 8.0-8.9 hours a night in 1960 to, on average, only being in bed 5-6 hours in present day(Van Cauter et al). But why has sleep duration decreased? With technology advancing and becoming ever present in people’s lives, it has therefor become much easier to fill waking hours with as much as possible.
Diabetes usually does not develop until after the age of 40, but the age is getting younger due to high rates of obesity in African Americans. The major causes of diabetes in African Americans are: obesity, hyperinsulinemia, poor diet, and lack of exercise, smoking habits, and hereditary traits. African Americans with diabetes have a higher risk for stroke, heart disease, and other cardiovascular complications. Amputations, blindness, and kidney disease are also complications African Americans, deal with that suffer from diabetes. Hispanics are at a greater risk of developing diabetes Type 2.
AK MALIK 26, March 2014 Pushing Back School Times Every teen has waken up in the morning wanting to go straight back to sleep. As children develop into their teenage years their sleep cycle is disrupted. Studies have shown that teenagers are awake later than children and adults because of how a teens body releases melatonin, a hormone that concerns the humans body's sleep cycle. Changing schools beginning times may have some benefits, but the department has to consider all drawbacks. The board of education should push back school times an hour because students will improve academically and they will improve their physical health.
