While some are caused under personal control such as diet and obesity, other factors like age, gender and genetics are not. Sleep deficiency and nutritional situation during fetal development has been linked to type II diabetes. Factors that lead to diabetes type II include: Lifestyle Lifestyle factors known to be important to the development of type II diabetes include obesity, lack of sufficient physical activity, poor diet, stress and urbanization. Excess body fat is linked with 64% of cases of diabetes in men and 77% of cases in women. I look at the back of the packaging to see how much a serving is and that is all I will take. Sometimes it is hard to only take a few chips. I will have water or vitamin water with my lunch. Dinners are now home cooked. I try to eat lean red meat only one or two times a week.
Often just knowing that we are thirsty as opposed to hungry will lead to a better choice being made in selecting drink over food. As cognitive function deteriorates in the dementia patient these decisions are obviously effected more so. In the extreme a dementia patient will not realise that they are dehydrated or that they are hungry and will go without food and drink for longer periods then perhaps is healthy unless they are prompted by their carers to receive nutrition This factor must also be balanced against the fact that older, sentient, people often need less food and drink then younger more active people and a good carer will also be conscious of this Dementia can effect the choices that a person makes on the type of food they want to eat. For example we have a lady called Joyce who prefers foods (and drinks) that are white. (She also prefers her chair to be white so you can see the level of dementia being dealt with here).
2. Explain how poor nutrition can contribute to an individual’s experience of dementia. Poor nutrition can make the symptoms of dementia worse, increase risk of more frequent infections requiring use of antibiotics. Malnutrition also affects immune system making it difficult to fight an infection. Effects of poor nutrition:- • Higher risk of infection • Reduced wound healing • Dermatological problems • Constipation • Disturbed sleeping pattern • Weight loss/gain Dementia can greatly affect a person's relationship to food and eating.
Three-Day Food Intake Christina Gates SCI/220 October 22, 2012 Vicki Clithero Three-Day Food Intake The food intake for the three days I wasn’t aware of the amount of lipids that I took in. I just ate and drank whatever to monitor my usual diet. Proteins mostly came from the meat like the chicken patty, country fried steak, teriyaki chicken, bratwursts, eggs, and bacon. Most of everything that I had consumed had some sort of protein in the nutrition facts such as my instant mash potatoes has 2g worth of protein. Carbohydrates were in the sodas, mash potatoes also, toast, green beans, potato salad, bake beans, soba noodles, macaroni salad, and fried rice.
Cespedes (2015), “Lack of proper nutrients can limit the body's immunity, limit the body's ability to rebuild itself from daily punishment so that your muscles do not rebuild, it can because you to have bowel problems, infections, decreases your ability to think and remember things. So essentially without proper nutrients, vitamins, and the building blocks of life such as protein, your body can wither away.” After doing this little experiment I have learned many things about my diet and eating habits. I know a lot of my inputs were based on time restraints on what I had going on over the weekend. So one thing about having a healthy balanced diet isn’t just eating proper, but making time and changing your lifestyle to be able to eat proper. Personally for me, I would need to add more servings of vegetables and fruit on a daily basis and eliminate the amount of cholesterol intake that I have been using.
Three Day Food Intake After recording my 3-day food intake in iprofile, I was able to see the effects and outcomes of the 14 day juice diet that I am currently following. Most of my recordings were redundant due to the fact that I am drinking the same vegetable juice, called the green monster, three times a day. The green monster juice consists of: * 2 green apples * 1 cucumber * 6 leafs of kale * 1 lemon * 3 tsp. ginger * 4 stalks of celery I understand that this diet does not meet the entire recommended dietary intake. I am juicing this way for a detoxifying cleanse of my body and weight lost.
It can also result from disorders of the esophagus. Dysphagia can be serious. Someone who cannot swallow safely may not be able to eat enough of the right foods to stay healthy or maintain an ideal weight. * Food pieces that are too large for swallowing may enter the throat and block the passage of air. When has Dysphagia and foods or liquids enter their airway, coughing or throat clearing sometimes cannot remove it.
Our bodies can only store and utilize so much sugar so we need to be aware if we are overloading our bodies with it. If our blood glucose levels begin to fall we will feel dizzy or lightheaded signaling that we need to eat to maintain this balance. It also important to recognize in my family’s case that eating too much sugar can also make us feel tired because our cells are not getting the proper nourishment from glucose. By using the knowledge I have learned from the importance of maintaining a good blood glucose balance I can teach myself, my mother, and my daughters on the importance of a proper
Poor nutrition can in turn worsen the symptoms of dementia for individuals. A report states that people with dementia who are undernourished may end up worsening their condition. but poor nutrition can also cause individuals with dementia to need specialist help more often as well eg requiring antibiotics. Malnutrition also affects the immune system making it difficult to fight
