Victoria DiGiovanni The majority of high schools are now requiring a certain amount of community service hours in order to graduate. Most students see this as a chore, but just how beneficial is it? Community service improves the student’s character, exposes the student to new interests, and benefits the student’s future. Mandatory community service enhances these advantages. A student’s participation in various activities throughout the community opens the door to not only a better society, but also an improvement in the student’s morality and character.
The campus tours showed me that an education in our home town or community college is not the only option. The tours help me to think about education outside of the state. This is a real booster shot for me personally since I never considered going out of state for college because of my low income
A simple choice like that can make a total difference in whether they really learned something or if they cheated themselves. I believe the students can decide if they want to succeed, and a lot of times after graduating high school they might become more mature and realize education is the key and be behind like they did in high school. Daniel Bruno's examples in the paper were very insightful. They gave you a better understanding of what he was talking about, rather than having to guess. His example of Thomas Jefferson's quote was a very good example because Thomas Jefferson is a very inspirational figure for the U.S. and people will take his words to heart.
A reflective assignment based around teaching theories learnt in TS1111 Throughout the first terms module work, there have been many new theories introduced and all of which have played a vital part in the success and development of my teaching, both professionally and personally. All of these teaching theories have given me the confidence to improve not just in a classroom situation but also in the planning and preparation of teaching. As a young teacher, who has recently just finished university the transformation from student to teacher has been a huge and sometimes daunting step. The task of being able to present information to students has caused some concern as had managing a classroom of 20 plus teenagers, therefore the confidence and new information received form this course has proved vital in the success of teaching. There have been many different theories that have helped in a classroom environment.
As stated by Quindlen, “I don’t believe you can write poetry, or compose music, or become an actor without downtime. (151)” A child’s full potential for a creative mind and future can be beneficial with adequate downtime. One of the many benefits of proper downtime is being able to have time to foster family relationships. Without the benefit of downtime parents may not be able to really get to know their children. For this reason Quindlen wrote, the lives of children who do not have enough downtime for family talks will miss this beneficial asset for families (151).
Similarly it is easier to take part in extra-curricular activities such as plays, sports matches and art if they do not have to arrange travel home late at night or after the school buses have left. Diversity of experience is not neglected as many schools run community volunteering schemes, and anyway students will spend substantial periods away from school in the holidays. Living with peers of their own age, round the clock, teaches children how to get along with each other and compromise. A variety of characters and interests must be accommodated, teaching children tolerance and compromise in a regulated environment. This can be especially helpful for working with university or company colleagues in the future.
Although difficulties are a part of life, there is always a positive side and a way to overcome them. Going away to college can be entertaining but at the same time it can be costly. Teens that come from high income families are at luck because they are given the luxury of not having to work or be in debt. On the other hand those that don’t come from high income families or even those that just have not saved find difficulties in financing their payments. Eventually they are forced to turn to government for aid.

I was able to go beyond the wall of commodity and experience true friendships. Before the internship, I wasn’t sure of what I wanted to do after high school but as I started to begin to get comfortable at the internship, I realized that my true passion is kids so I want to be a social worker who deals with children. One who puts the child’s life before theirs and loves what they do. Because I was an intern at NCCF, I acquired many skills that I did not know I have as well as abilities and characteristics. I realized that I am extremely passionate about life and helping others.
Community Service is an important activity every person should embrace as they are growing up. Doing community service, a person will find themself and be exposed to the lifestyles of other people, which also tends to make the volunteer more aware of the needs of the less fortunate. Volunteering also contributes to the result of more teenagers being more grateful for everything they have and thus they give more. This Sophomore year I wish I had done more community service than i had done and I regret not following through with the opportunities I was given. Growing up I was taught to give more than I receive.
