The Pact , by Drs. George Jenkins, Samson Davis, and Rameck Hunt, is a beautiful and inspiring story of three inner city children banning together to persevere the struggles of the streets as well as school. To make this story even more inspiring is the fact it is true. Growing up in Newark New Jersey these boys survived poverty, poor schools, thug-life, and the swarming crack epidemic that engulfed so many cities like Newark in the 1980’s. Not only did these boys survive but they came up in the world and now serve as an example to young people everywhere. Role models played a very important factor in the lives of these individuals. Ms. Johnson, a third grade teacher, pushed George to strive for more in his life. Ms. Johnson’s biggest contribution, was her ability and desire to expose children to college and higher learning, making what seemed impossible to most of them a not-so-distant goal. The exposure from a young age can have great impact on children’s lives and it certainly worked for the three men today. She told them that poverty and other factors should not dissuade them from attending college. As well, she stressed life outside of Newark. Be it discounted Broadway tickets and a trip to New York City or souvenirs accrued from her own travels, she showed that there was a world that did not just deal in the realm of…show more content…
The steadiness in Rameck home life can be attributed to his grandmother. Rameck’s granmother served as a surrogate mother for Rameck, earning the name “Ma.” Rameck’s biological mother was a drug addict and a very young mother, not yet grown up herself, having had him at 17. While she was not a stellar example of how to be she indirectly showed Rameck the pitfalls associated with drug use. This steered Rameck toward a sober path and help him achieve his goals. His grandmother made him feel responsible for changing his life and remained as the one steadfast person he could depend
