Reflections on my learning experience – a personal story The aim of the TEP001 Study Skills unit is to assist students in developing key study skills that are essential to manage tertiary study effectively and confidently. The key study skills taught in this unit include goal setting, organisation skills, time management, effective reading and note-taking skills, learning styles, stress management, academic writing and academic research. This reflective essay reviews my motivations and expectations at the start of the semester and three key study skills and strategies that I learnt and found to be the most useful. This includes goal setting, organisation skills, time management and stress management. Firstly, my motivations and expectations for enrolling in the TEP001 Study Skills unit at the start of the semester were to acquire and develop effective study skills and strategies that would help me to become a confident active independent learner. I felt that if I could learn these valuable key study skills I would then have a platform and framework that would not only assist me in completing my other TEP1 subjects but it would also increase the possibility of me going on to further studies and maybe eventually enter a degree program. Cottrell (2008) explains “a skill is a learned activity, something that can be developed through practice”. This brings me to the first key study skill outlined in my thesis statement, Goal Setting. I realized that it was crucial for me to be crystal clear about why I wanted to study and what my study goals were and also how I was going to achieve them. I knew that if I was clear on why, what and how I would be able to keep the bigger picture in mind for the challenging times ahead in my academic pursuit.
