ALIYA ZHANALIYEVA DEVELOPING READING SKILLS ON THE TOPIC ENVIRONMENT Research Proposal Introduction My work is focused on developing reading skills. Reading comprehension skills are important for students to become effective readers. Reading comprehension skills allow us to read proficiently, learn capably and to visualize mentally. There are two kinds of reading skills: extensive and intensive. Extensive and intensive reading skills are absolutely different from each other. I have decided to write in this work about extensive reading. Extensive reading is the reading to enjoy text and reading of quantities of books at the level applicable for students and they are able to choose topics themselves according to their interests. This type of reading is based on artchoice and aims that are artkey features of real – life reading. Background There are a lot of academics who research extensive reading. This kind of reading ^also called as ‘silent reading’ or ‘pleasure reading’ (Krashen, 1985; Krashen 1988; Vaugham 1982). Reading of a large number of materials and texts, reading to understand in general, reading with the purpose of gaining enjoyment from the material are the basic characteristics of extensive reading according to the Susser and Robb (1990). On this theme more helpful information is in the articles and reports on pedagogical aspects (e.g., Hamrick, 1989; Kalb, 1986; Lupardus, 1987; Susser & Robb, 1989; Tangitau, 1973). 1. Research Method The aim of the research is to point out issues in extensive reading and establishing an extensive reading programme in the second language classroom. The main goal of extensive reading is usually to create a reader assurance. The research question is the following: 1. What novice teachers need to know to be able to develop reading skills?
