In the Hindu tradition Sita, avatar of Lakshmi, was one of the principal characters in the Ramayana, an epic named after her husband, Lord Rama. She is esteemed as the standard setter for wifely and womanly virtues for all Hindu women. Some time after their wedding, circumstances forced Rama to leave Ayodhya and spend a period of exile in the forests of Dandaka and later Panchavanti. Although her husband begged her not to, Sita willingly renounced the comforts of the palace and joined her husband in the brave travels of exile. However, she had to endure a lot of pain as the Panchavati forest became the scene for her abduction byRavan, the Demon King. Ravana kidnapped Sita and took her back to his kingdom in Lanka, where she was held prisoner in one of his palaces. Through out her one year captivity, Ravana expressed his desire for Sita, however she refused him and struggled to maintain her chastity. Rama sent Hanuman to find Sita and he succeeded. Sita gave Hanuman her jewelry and asked him to give it to her husband. However, Hanuman was caught by Lankan forces, but managed to escape and in return burned down the Lanka capital city. Finally Rama saved Sita after waging in a famous battle to defeat Ravana. Since Sita was kept in captivity by Ravana all that time, she had to go through the 'Agni-Pariksha', the test of going through the fire, in order to prove her chastity to the world. When she comes out she is not burnt, the coals turn to lotuses, showing that she was faithful to her Lord Rama. The couple returned to Ayodhya, where Rama was crowned king. While Rama's trust and affection for Sita never wavered, it soon became evident that some people in Ayodhya could not accept Sita's long captivity under the power of Ravana. One man says, "No pusillanimous Rama who would take his wife back after she had lived in the house of another man".
