Wei Song Zhuang Survey of the Islam World HHS 135 Professor Teke 4/12/2009 Premodernity, Modernity, and Post-Modernism Pre-modernity, or the age before 1500s, was a period of time in the west, when almost all of the traditional values were based on the belief in God. Their life was centered around God and all holy bible. Economics were based on directions given by the Holy Church. And everyone followed them because the church was the voice of God. The judiciary system was founded on ideas from the bible. The sodomites were punished for their sin against god. People weren’t allowed to have abortions because it was against god. Criminals were punished by the church therefore in the right way God would’ve punished them. God was the best judge of all. Science was also based on the bible as everyone believed that God created everything in seven days. God was the origin of life and no one else thought different. The church basically had all the power. It wasn’t until the Protestant Reformation that people started changing their views about God. It was through Martin Luther’s decision to nail the 95 Scriptures on the castle church in Wittenberg that changed the entire course of western culture. These 95 theses criticized the claims of indulgent preaches that one could avoid God’s punishment for sin by purchasing indulgences. People started doubting God and it served as the impetus to the beginning of Modernity. Modernity was the period of time from 1500s to 1800s that marked the rising of cultural and intellectual movements of man. Western life evolved from a God centered society to a man centered society. This began with Galileo’s dispute of Ptolemy’s planetary model suggesting that the sun was actually the center of the galaxy instead of the earth. This made man to question themselves on their own views instead of always turning to God. Ibn Rushd even commented
