Suicide, the third leading cause in teen deaths and yet this is one that is ignored very easily. According to Kathryn Murphy the author of What can you do to prevent teen suicide? states, “The suicide rate among youths has slowly declined since 1992, but it remains unacceptably high” (Murphy). Parents all over the country should have accessibility to a preventive suicide seminar that would be held in schools all over the country. As a society we should take the initiative and contribute towards this silent killer that hinders teens today. From the cause of depression teens begin to get ideas of how to leave the life they know behind with what they know surrounds them. Guns may not be the cause of suicide but according to Keith King, author of Preliminary Effectiveness of Surviving the Teens Suicide Prevention and Depression Awareness where it states “Access to a gun can provide a lethal solution to problems for an adolescent who’s considering suicide” (King). As a result of depression the thoughts of suicide become more and more relevant to the ones who want to seek that way out and with accessibility to weapons that action becomes that much more relevant. As time goes on parents may assume that the child is simply going through a phase and that it will all go away. As we look at our society today, the responsibilities of a person simply increase with the years like family, work, and the financial status of the family are all contributors. A child that was likely to commit suicide as a teen will depend on that option as an adult when things seem to be getting too hard. Having a go to person in school is a good alternative as a resource that can be available at school but most suicides are done at home or away from school. In these seminars the parents will learn the red flags to pick up on such as a sudden loss of interest in things they used to enjoy, a change in sleep patterns and how they are doing in school. All these are good indicators to how a child may be battling the struggles of depression and the consideration of suicide begins to hinder. Parents will also be aware of how to keep the home area safe from any easy access to things such as guns as states before. They may not realize how much of an impact that can have considering the fact that “In 2001, firearms were used in 54% of youth suicides” (Murphy).
