On occasion there are self-awareness unexplored problem areas that the counsellor encounters with a client. This could be the counsellor struggling to show acceptance to the client as they are discussing a belief with the opposite opinions of the counsellor. Transference and counter transference (where the client or counsellor see traits of individuals personal to them for various reasons and experience conscious or unconscious feelings towards the other) is also a problem are in counselling which continuous training and supervision sessions are needed to reflect on and discuss supported clients. I need to work in a person centred way and take into account the service users likes and dislikes, beliefs and any personal history they have , I can deliver the best care possible to them. At the same time I need to offer assistance they may require within my role of a support worker. Diversity should be valued as no individual is the same as any other. People don’t always accept what is different and diversity can lead a society to grow or to lead to violence and hatred. Observing an individuals reaction allows us to understand how a person has reacted to what they have been told. In some cases an individual could feel uncomfortable therefore observing how they react would allow us to accommodate how they feel and go about the conversation in a different place and/or manner. It also allows us to build a relationship with the individual easier as it we react to a situation better whilst observing every detail.
During the first meeting, our facial expressions and body language can help in developing a good relationship. A friendly eye contact can complement the good use of body language and contribute in putting person in ease if nervous. Communication is a two way track in which listening is also equally important as talking.
