My Family and other Animals Character Study essay: Theodore Stephanides Theodore Stephanides is a scientist in the book ‘My family and other animals’ by Gerald Durrell. In the book Theodore teaches Gerry about the nature and animals on the island of Corfu. Theodore was also great friends with the whole of the Durrell family. He was renound for telling amusing stories and his humble and respectful manor towards other people. Firstly, Theodore came as a shock to Gerald as he actually treated him as an equal: ‘I said how do you do, but to my surprise the bearded man rose to his feet, stepped briskly across the room and held out a large white hand.’ Gerald deeply respected Theodore for that quality. Throughout the book Theodore acts very humbly and respectfully even to children such as Gerald who are a lot younger than himself. Furthermore, as he speaks to Gerald even when telling him a fact he does not know he says it as if it is lost inside Gerald’s mind and he is just helping him find it. Theodore teaches in a light hearted, but passionate conversational tone as he teaches. Even his teaching is very egalitarian.…show more content…
Such as: the Corfu opera, involving a large opera singer bouncing off piles of mattresses while supposedly dead. There is also the ‘Battle of Thermopylae’ where an onstage sword fight got a slightly too realistic. These stories excite the family so much, Larry one of Gerald’s brothers starts to question if they are really true.
