Moral Minima Melissa Fort SOC 120 Instructor Raeven Chandler October 7, 2013 We make right and wrong decisions every day. Some may be big, some small, some right and some are wrong. In the “Moral Minima” Lenn Goodman talks about four different areas of relativism and morality. Goodman suggested that some things are just simply wrong. In our textbook, relativism is the idea that one’s beliefs and values are understood in the terms of one’s society, culture, or even one’s own individual values (Mosser, 2010). In one’s culture, sex slavery might be considered to be normal; however in our culture sex slavery is banned. In our country polygamy is highly frowned upon, while in another culture it is normal to be married to one or more husband or wife. This can lead to relativism because it requires people to understand other’s beliefs are different. Sometimes it depends on their society and how they were raised in their culture that impacts their lives. The decisions are made by leaders or political groups. Leaders and political groups believe their choices are the moral way to deal with the situations that arise. This requires us to be a relativist. “A relativist’s solution to such conflicts seems to be a recommendation of tolerance and the suggestion that understands the values of another’s cultures it also helps us respect such cultures” (Mosser, 2010). However, Lenn Goodman stated that there are many things that cannot be accepted nor should we have to be comfortable with it. Murder or premeditated mass murder destroys human lives every day. Murder kills hundreds to millions of men, women, and children. Murder cuts lives short every day of someone that’s not “marked”. “Violence strips away moral barriers and blocks the view of faces” (pg.88). Genocide targets members of groups, in hopes of destroying a race, culture, or ethnic identity. According to
