Case C: M-commerce – Group E2 – Team 8 1. What is the “8 second rule” of the internet and why is it important for m-commerce technology? The “8 second rule” refers to the time web users normally wait for a web page to load before they refresh it or go to an other web page. The best way to deal with the 8 second rule is to minimize latency. This impatient attitude has a great impact on the case of m-commerce as customers are still not confident with the security of the service. When customers finally get beyond their emotional concern of engaging in a mobile transaction the system must exhibit to be efficient, fast and secure. 2. Why would it be useful for m-commerce providers to have records of their users’ purchase histories? Keeping track of the past users’ purchases can be useful to providers in both the two aspects of m-commerce, shopping via mobile phone and mobile payment. In the first case the old records will give information to the provider about the specific tastes of individual clients. This will enable providers to promote personalized offers to their clients based on the client’s interests. It is the same principle Amazon implementing successfully, adapted to the mobile browsers. Doing so operator will encourage customers to utilize the service. Regarding the mobile payment side, past records can provide information about the types of stores and situations where the service has been more utilized. For example, providers could see that most of the clients used the mobile payment to buy a metro ticket and only a few of them used it to pay for lunch at a restaurant furnished with the appropriate reader device. This type of information will show that it would better to install new reader devices in all the metro station that are yet not equipped rather than distributing devices to new restaurants. 3.
