Media Influence on Children

3/17/14 For years, the influence the media has on children and whether the media should be regulated has been debated. If it were to be regulated, then by whom? It could be up to parents to determine what they want their children exposed to and for how long. Or, the government could take action and only allow violence on TV at certain times or censor it completely. Media has an influence on the behavior of children, it is up to the parents to regulate it and determine if the influence is positive or negative. Source C states that violence in the media does not cause children to be violent in the real world. Although, Source A claims that television violence causes an increase in violent behavior. Similarly, Source E says that proper use of media has a positive impact on children. And, Source B states that media can be used as an outlet for violence. It has been said, that violence in the does not have an effect on children in the real world, and that no regulation is needed. Source C states, “The frequently alleged link between violence in the media and violence in the “real world” is not in fact supported by existing empirical research. A new report submitted in this proceeding confirms that the overall scientific evidence fails to support the hypothesis that exposure to violent media content causes people to act aggressively,”(source C line 15). Millions of people see violent media every day and never commit a violent act in their lives. It would also be nearly impossible to properly censor the media. Many popular shows all throughout television history would have to be removed. On the other hand, it is believed that watching large amounts of TV violence causes an increase in violent behavior in children.
