Introduction to communication in health, social care or children’s and young people’s settings Unit Number 4222-201 Outcome 1 1.1 Identify different reasons why people communicate. Communication is used all the time to pass on information and it works 2-ways. It shows that you are trying to understand as well as expressing something. A list of some reasons are as follows * Sharing of ideas and options * Sharing thoughts and feelings * Finding out about another person * Sharing sympathy with others * Finding out information from others Communication can be verbal or non verbal depending on the individual and circumstances. If a person is unable to speak then body language will be used such as touching, hand gestures, sign language and facial expressions. We all communicate in different ways and the tone, pitch, stress and clarity are very important to the meaning of speech. Also it’s important to speak clearly and slowly, you must have eye contact and position yourself to the level of the individual to show them that you are listening. 1.2 Explain how effective communication affects all aspects of own work. We need to communicate with people all the time, but most of all the person who we are supporting, also including family and friends who are most likely to be involved in the support of the individual. It is also important to communicate with other work colleagues and with professional people such as, GP, Social Workers and Funeral Directors. You communicate differently with people depending on the purpose of the communication. The importance of communication is to make yourself understood, and being understood makes us feel better about ourselves. A communication difficulty affects a person’s self-esteem and self-image.
